The Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the body, which matches the description of 28-year-old Areal Smith, was found by a road crew on Tuesday. This was reported by NBC12.

Smith, the store clerk, was last seen leaving work at the Claraville Little Sue Food Store in Heathsville on Jan. 12.

A man from Virginia was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping Smith a week after she was last seen.

Tyrone N. Samuel, 50, was charged Saturday in Smith’s abduction. He is being held without bail and new charges are pending.

Police say Smith was alone when the store closed. Surveillance cameras show her leaving the store at 9:05 pm and starting the car.

She returned to the store and went outside again at 9:18 p.m. and got into another car. The driver of this car was found and is not considered a suspect in her disappearance.

Smith returned to the store, turned on the alarm, and locked the door. She was last seen carrying a garbage bag to a landfill on the east side of the building, where there are no cameras.

The next morning, a salesman who came to open the store found that Smith’s car was still running in the parking lot. Smith was nowhere to be found.

Virginia State Police brought a K-9 dog that tracked its odor from garbage containers to nearby Walnut Point Road before it ended.

Smith’s grieving sister, Lydia, told News Nation that she last spoke to her sister on Saturday, Jan. 8. She said calls to Smith’s phone go directly to voicemail.

Lydia said her sister expressed concern that someone in the store had made her feel “uncomfortable”.

She said Smith did not know Samuel, the man accused of her abduction.
