SAVOK | Suad Bushnak of Toronto has been awarded the Kathleen McMurray Music Prize

The Ontario Arts Foundation has announced Toronto-based composer Suad Bushnak, who has won this year’s Kathleen McMorrow Music Award.

The award recognizes the composition and presentation of contemporary classical music by Ontario composers.

This year’s award is in recognition of Bushnak SinBach. The work was originally commissioned by the Canadian Arab Orchestra of Mississauga (CAO), which plans to perform it on tour in 2022.

Previous winners of the award were Paris Sabet (2020), Jordan Pal (2019) and Chan Ka Ning (2018).

About the composer

  • Suad Bushnak is a first-generation Jordanian-Canadian composer of Bosnian, Syrian and Palestinian roots.
  • She is actively involved in music both in movies and in concerts. With 35 films to date, she has received awards and short films screened at festivals including the International Film Festivals in Locarno, Hot Docs, Edinburgh, Dubai, the Red Sea and Seattle.
  • He studied composition at McGill University

Funny fact

If you’ve ever been a music student at the University of Toronto in the last four decades, you’d know Kathleen McMore.

As one of Canada’s largest music libraries, McMore headed the Music Library from 1974 to 2013, with a special responsibility for creating record collections and special collections. During her tenure, she increased her holdings of books, records, and scores from about 100,000 to nearly 500,000.
