A Michigan school district denied a disturbing report that a principal placed litter boxes in school restrooms for students who identify as cats.
The incident apparently originated at a December school board meetingwhen a parent said the principal at her child’s school placed “a litter box in one of the unisex bathrooms for the kids that identify as cats.”
She said the school principal put the litter boxes out to accommodate children who identify as “furries.”
Furries are defined as a community of people who identify as animal characters with human personalities and characteristics.
“I’m all for creativity and imagination,” the mother said, “but when someone lives in a fantasy world and expects other people to go along with it, I have a problem with that.”
Video footage from the school board meeting went viral online and was even shared by the Michigan Republican Party’s co-chair.
When the story gained traction on Facebook and in the NY PostSuperintendent Michael E. Sharrow issued a statement.
“At the December 20 Board of Education meeting, a community member addressed the Board of Education. During her comments she stated that litter boxes were provided within MPS student restrooms for those who identify themselves as” furries. “
Let me be clear in this communication. There is no truth whatsoever to this false statement / accusation! There have never been litter boxes within MPS schools.
It is such a source of disappointment that I felt the necessity to communicate this message to you. In this divisive / contentious world in which we currently find ourselves, I ask that if you hear wild accusations that don’t sound like something in which your Midland Public Schools Board of Education, Administration, District would be part, take a moment to send an MPSConnect message to me. “
