Interview of the leaders of the Berlin Film Festival 2022 – deadline


It feels like I was talking on the phone yesterday to Berlinale directors Mariet Risenbeck and Karl Chatrian after their pre-recording a video ad for the 2021 festival program, and the three of us looked forward to next year with the hope that this pandemic is finally behind us.

Instead, when this time the opening of the 2022 program was broadcast live (so far no press), the situation with Covid in Germany remains so uncertain that the conversations are dominated again, as even when this festival takes place, which is distracting. from a lineup that boasts some stellar arthouse names.

Those who come to Berlin for the 72nd edition of the event (February 10-16, screenings will run until February 20) will receive new films from Claire Dennis, who debuted in the Berlin Competition, Hun San-su, Ulrich Seidl, Rita Pan, Peter Strickland, Bertrand Banello, Andrew Dominic, Dario Argento and many more.

This is a completely indie program, with only one film in the lineup from the studio (Universal’s Meeting) and one of Netflix’s streamers Against the ice). This is even more than last year’s figure of zero, and the program of the series Berlinale has a show from both Amazon and HBO Max.

Due to the fact that the industry is hesitant whether to travel to Germany, Risenbeck reveals that the festival team is now planning a series of industrial sessions so that executives do not have to fight for tickets, especially in cinemas. be strictly limited to 50% of capacity.

Below, Risenbeck and Chatrian talk about their thoughts on this year’s edition and whether further restrictions can be expected from German regional governments in the coming weeks.

DEADLINE: Congratulations on your lineup in 2022. Were there movies you wanted to wait for later this year due to uncertainty?

CHATRYN: There were a couple of movies we watched that weren’t ready in time. I believe that post-production studios sometimes had to close [because of Covid], there were several films from Europe that could not be shot. But I am very happy with the choice. The films we invited accepted our invitation.

DEADLINE: Is this a band focused on independents rather than studios, have you tried to get more studio films?

CHATRYN: In September we had discussions, usually there [more studio films]. I couldn’t go to Los Angeles not because it was impossible to travel, but because the studios weren’t prepared to receive strangers. We have one movie from Universal [The Outfit, Out of Competition], there have been discussions about other names.

DEADLINE: If you could go to Los Angeles, do you think you would have more studio movies in the program?

CHATRYN: No, I don’t think that would have changed. Some of the films released in the first quarter were moved later in the calendar, which affected.

DEADLINE: What have been your discussions with streamers this year?

CHATRYN: We have one movie produced by Netflix [Against The Ice, Berlinale Special Gala]. We also had discussions with Amazon, after all the choice is the result of our decisions.

DEADLINE: Is this the final lineup or is there a possibility of one or two late additions?

CHATRYN: No, this is the final lineup. This is also because we are making a premiere in just six days, we have no room for more titles. It’s a shame because we had a couple who could play very well, but we have to stay with the movies that are there.

DEADLINE: The program is 20% smaller than in 2020, but it was a bigger anniversary edition, how much smaller is it?

CHATRYN: 2020 was special, we had one anniversary program that made sense for this year, and it was the 50th anniversary of the Forum. But this year we have fewer films in some sections, mostly Berlinale Special, and we also decided not to add more Galas.

DEADLINE: So in 2023 it will probably be bigger than this year, but not as big as 2020?

CHATRYN: Yes. But for me, I care about showing the selected film. When you say yes, I feel like I have a commitment to the film. How many presses will be able to see this? Will we be able to hold a press conference? When will it be shown? How many other films will he face? But yes, I expect next year to be a little more than this year, but this year is quite good. Watching this whole program for journalists will be a challenge.

DEADLINE: Mariette, from an organizational point of view, what do you expect in terms of attendance levels? Have guests of the industry expressed interest in coming to the festival?

RISSENBEEK: Guests of the industry are sure to be found, businesses and buyers will remain. But overall it will be much less than in previous years because we will not be entering the physical market. Travel restrictions can also complicate travel, especially from the US and Asia. Indeed, it is too early to tell, because the restrictions are still changing, it is not clear yet.

DEADLINE: Is there a plan to arrange any buyer shows?

DRAWING: We will try to offer something to the industry so that they do not have to fight with the usual audience for tickets, that’s still going on.

DEADLINE: Are the current capacity limits of 50% for each seat?

RISSENBEEK: Yes.

DEADLINE: How does this affect your income?

RISSENBEEK: In Germany there is support for events that can not fill all the seats, you can apply for extra money from the government. We will place an application there and it will fill in the gaps for us if we are likely to be reduced to 50%.

DEADLINE: The number of Covid cases has reached a fixed level in Germany in recent days, is it likely that the government may impose additional restrictions affecting the festival?

RISSENBEEK: It can always be in our time. Today it is impossible to say “no, nothing will happen”. Many infections are mutations of Omicron, so not as many people are hospitalized as previous options. Now the situation is manageable, but of course, if in the next 10 days they double, I do not know what Berlin will do. I talk to them almost daily.
