Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (in English) Review {3.0 / 5} and review score

It has been more than two years since the release of Marvel’s latest film in Indian cinemas. Since Spider-Man: AWAY FROM HOME [2019], Marvel fans have been waiting for the next series or, more precisely, the phase that will appear on the screens. Hopes were pinned on Scarlett Johansson’s film THE BLACK WIDOW. [2021]. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this film was released directly in India. But now, with “CHANCES AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS”, Marvel intends to return to the big screen with a bang.

SHAN-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS begins with a representation of a man named Xu Wenwu who finds the mystical ten rings that give him immortality and great strength. The plot is about Vienna, which gathers an army of warriors called the Ten Rings and conquers many kingdoms and overthrows governments throughout history. In 1996, Wen begins searching for the village of Ta Luo, which is said to be home to various mythical beasts, to expand its power. He finds the entrance to the village, but is stopped by the village guardian Ying Li. Eventually they fall in love and give birth to two children, Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialin. Vena leaves ten rings and her organization to be with her family. However, Lee is eventually killed by the Iron Gang, the old rivals of the Ten Rings, and Venu again takes up the rings to kill them and resume his criminal activities. The Death Merchant, a high-ranking member of the Ten Rings, brings Shang-Chi to the Ten Rings complex for training in all forms of combat. At the age of 14, Wen sends Shang-Chi to kill the leader of the Iron Gang. After completing his mission, the injured Shang-Chi throws the Ten Rings and flees to the United States, where he takes the name Sean. Years later, Sean, aka Shang-Chi, lives in San Francisco and works as a valet with his best friend Katie Chen. One day, on the way to work in the Muni subway, Shang-Chi and Katie are attacked by members of the Ten Rings led by Razor Fist. Despite the beating with them, Shang-Chi discovers that the pendant his mother gave him was taken away by them. Fearing that the Ten Rings are chasing Selin behind her pendant, Shang-Chi decides to track her down and reveals her past to Katie, who agrees to help him. Eventually they find her in an underground fighting club in Macau, which she owns; Selin expresses his resentment at Shang-Chi for leaving her family and her father for neglecting her. The Fight Club then attacks the Ten Rings Regiment led by the Death Dealer. Wenwu arrives unexpectedly during the attack and captures Shang-Chi, Katie and Selin. After the capture, they are taken back to the Vienna manor and told that he is in search of rescuing his wife, their captive mother. However, Shang-Chi, Katie and Selin flee and make their way to the village only to realize that their father has been deceived by an evil creature, and to protect all life on earth, they will now have to face their father Wenwu, the leader of the Ten Rings.

As an ode to Chinese culture and wisdom, “SHANGZHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS” contains many references to oriental folklore. From stories about soul-consuming demons to eternal guardian spirits, the film covers a wide range. The film begins on a light note with the introduction of the main characters and soon moves on to laying the groundwork for what is to come. Once Shang Chi (Sean) and Katie are introduced, the plot quickly moves on to discovering who they really are and their background. From there, we see that new characters are introduced, which helps move the story forward. Interestingly, despite being an action movie, “SHAN CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS” begins slowly and is gaining momentum. However, before the break, the processes slow down significantly, but intensify in the second half. The film has a lot of humorous elements, with lots of Easter eggs and surprises for true Marvel fans who keep the viewer in place. However, the second half of the film is a well-executed and well-structured sequence of actions, which involves almost everyone who will present in the first half. In fact, “SHAN CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS” makes Marvel fans jump for joy when the action unfolds with uninterrupted CGI, well-coordinated action and tricks and, of course, the Marvel brand with background music that creates a sharp crash .

Destin Daniel Cretan about Simu Liu, Tony Leung, The Avengers Shang Chi and the legend of the ten rings

Despite this, for those who have watched the Marvel series since day one, “SHAN CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS” seems to lack the decisive “X” factor, something like an iron man, Thor. , The Avengers and the Hulk stand out. But despite this, and the fact that the story is quite predictable, the film manages to entertain and revive the nostalgic feeling of watching a Marvel movie in theaters.

In terms of performance, Simu Liu in the role of Shang-Chi well articulated the role of a child trained to be a master killer. Liu manages to perform his actions with aplomb, and also gets emotions. Nora Lum, professionally known as Aquafina as Katie, Manner Zhang as Selin, and Tony Qiu-Wai Lun as Xu Wenwu are just as good at their roles. A special mention here is of Tony Chiu, for he gracefully balances his character as a father who longs for his children, a husband for his wife, and a military leader for his power. Michelle Yeo and Ben Kingsley are used very poorly, with one present only as a welcome party and the other as a comic interlude.

As for the background score, Marvel has repeatedly proven that they are masters of the game when it comes to using sound to reach a climax. Be it in any of their previous releases the background score has always played an important role in giving meaning to events on the screen. In “SHAN CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS” the same thing, the difference is that this time the music has heavy shades of oriental instruments. This combined with flawless CGI and smooth transitions makes the watch entertaining.

All in all, “SHAN CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS” pretty well manages to revive the saga of Marvel militant heroes. Despite the predictable storyline, the film is definitely a visual spectacle that can be experienced on the big screen.
