The Atlanta Police Department announced the arrest of a 22-year-old male suspect in the shooting death of 6-month-old Grayson Fleming Gray.
Grayson was in his carseat in the back of his mother’s car when he was hit by a stray bullet around 2 pm in Atlanta’s Dixie Hills neighborhood on Monday.
Mayor Andre Dickens announced the arrest of Dequasie Little, of Decatur, on Tuesday. “In just 24 hours we have a suspect under arrest … This has to stop. It has affected the entire community,” Dickens said of the gun violence in Atlanta.
Grayson’s mom, Kerry Gray, told police she stopped at an intersection near Anderson Park when she heard gunfire and a bullet struck her son in the backseat. Grayson was pronounced dead at Grady Hospital.
Police say Grayson was killed during a shootout between two suspects riding in two cars near a Food Mart convenience store at 202 Anderson Avenue in northwest Atlanta.
“This hurts,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said during a press conference at the crime scene on Monday afternoon.
“I am here because I want the family of this innocent 6-month-old child to know that we care,” Dickens said.
He added that Grayson is the third child killed by gun violence in Atlanta just 25 days into the new year.
