The editors note: Debuting series “Read the script” from Deadline and honors the scripts of films that will be a factor in this year’s race for awards.
French dispatch it’s not even half the full title of the film. On screen, it is French Dispatch Liberty Kansas Evening Sun.. Wes Anderson’s latest film is a collection of short stories that serve as examples of stories published in Dispatch.
In the film, the magazine stops publishing after the death of editor Arthur Gautzer Jr. (Bill Murray). When the staff prepares his obituary, some of the highlights from the stories he publishes come to life on screen.
Erbsen Sazerak (Owen Wilson) rides a bicycle below the Enuy-sur-Blaze. J. K. L. Berensen (Tilda Swinton) writes about the prisoner and artist Moses Rosenthaler (Benicia Del Toro), whose museum is his bodyguard Simon (Leo Seidou). College students Defirelli (Timothy Shalame) and Juliet (Lina Hudry) discuss politics, and reporter Lucinda Kremenz (Francis McDormand) covers their protests. Finally, Robak Wright (Jeffrey Wright) tells the story of a police kitchen and a gang of kidnappers.
Anderson wrote the screenplay and co-wrote the short story with Roman Kapala (with whom Anderson was nominated for an Oscar). Kingdom of the rising moon), Hugo Guinness (they co-authored Oscar nominations Hotel Grand Budapest) and Jason Schwartzman. Anderson said that since living in France, he has always wanted to make a collection of short stories and a film in the French style. He also said The New YorkerThe stories inspired the articles in The French Dispatch.
Wilson, a neighbor of Anderson’s room at the college, confirms that he has been a devoted reader at least since their school days.
Howitzer and the authors of The French Dispatch were based on staff The New Yorker. Harold Ross and William Sean teamed up in a howitzer. Joseph Mitchell and Luke Sante inspired Sazerak. Rosamonde Bernier inspired Berensen. Mavis Galant was inspired by Kremenets, and Wright combines James Baldwin, AJ Libling and Tennessee Williams.
Schwartzman, co-authored Darjeeling Limited and Dog Island with Anderson, said they followed the same process for French dispatch. Namely, they compose a story along the way, rather than outlining it in advance. It has worked so far.
French dispatch The premiere took place at the Cannes Film Festival after being postponed for a year due to the pandemic and opened via Searchlight Pictures on October 22nd.
